Construction continues on Fallsway Cycletrack

We’ve posted photos of the construction on the new Jones Fall cycle track construction on the Fallsway before, but the construction has gotten along pretty well since then. The lane looks wide enough for it to be a two way cycletrack, allowing you to ride contra-flow towards downtown on the Fallsway, but it’s not clear if this is part of the design.

Having a nice cycle lane like this will make novice cyclists a lot more comfortable, since they will not have to contend with speeding traffic passing them too closely while also riding the incline.

We’ve heard some negative comments from drivers on the street, and thought it would be a good time to write a letter to our city representatives to tell them we appreciate the coming improvements. Use this page to write a letter and keep the cycletrack around for the next 25 years.

Check back in the next couple days for some information on the improvements in progress on Guilford Avenue’s new bicycle boulevard, and a new advocacy group that you can participate in.

Cycletrack is a stretch of a term since it will be used by both bicyclists & pedestrians.  This is Phase 2 of the Jones Falls Trail.  A separated path between Penn Station and the Inner Harbor.  There’s an 18 month construction schedule, but given the work that’s been done lately, thet’re ahead of schedule

While the JFT is technically a shared-use path, I suspect pedestrians will use the sidewalk which parallels the cycletrack for its entire length along the Fallsway.  In fact East Coast Greenway hikers will be encouraged to use the more central and scenic Carles Street sidewalks to traverse downtown, rather than the peripheral and somewhat isolated Fallsway route.
