Mt. Royal Bike Lane Update

Lyric Opera House Roundabout Rendering

To renew the conversation about the Mt. Royal bike lane, Baltimore Velo presents a rendering of the potential roundabout in front of the Lyric Opera House.

Here are the facts:

  • Fred Lazarus, President of MICA, is against the cycle track, despite saying at the MICA open house he was for “whatever the experts at DOT” recommended. He claims no one cycles on Mount Royal.
  • Lyric Opera House is against any bike infrastructure because it hypothesizes cyclists will mow down their patrons. Any bike infrastructure, they say, will put them out of business.
According to Bikemore:
There will be a public meeting in late summer. We will need MICA and UB students, Bolton Hill residents, business owners, cyclists, and pedestrians to come out in force to support a safer, greener, and friendlier Mount Royal Avenue.

Baltimore Velo encourages you, more than ever, to reach out to UB, MICA and the Lyric to let them know the community wants a bike lane–especially if you live in the Bolton Hill area.

As a 20-something who enjoys both bicycling and opera, I think this is the exact wrong response from the Lyric. If they want to be a viable organization in the long term, they need to attract young people. They should welcome the cycletrack with open arms, and install bike racks in front to boot.
